Caramelized bacon
PC cracker topped with caramelized bacon, babybel, pepper salami and a kettle chip
Greek salad
Shooter sandwich
Guess the different ingradients
Top to bottom: Italian bread, mozzarella cheese, bacon, red and yellow bell peppers, steak, mushrooms, onions

Makes a hot chocolate drink, thanks Jojo.
Review of Food:
I am not a wine guy, so I did not enjoy the wine. The shooter sandwich, caramelized bacon were delicious and filling. No bad washroom experience due to this event.

Let's analyze some of the food sanitation during the event.

As soon as we arrived, the tableware and utensils were neatly prepared.
Knives were washed as soon as it was used. No cross-contamination was observed.
Hands were washed before sprinkling brown sugar on top of the bacon. I would have prepared if a spoon was used.
Thanks for hosting FD!

 Review of Restaurant:

  • Why did I come to this restaurant?

I stayed late at work and wanted to eat something fast. If it was Whopper Wednesday, I would have eaten 4 of them.

  • What did I think of the service?

The service was slow. No one frequents this Burger King. I don't know how they manage to maintain this location.

  • How did my sensitive stomach feel?

My stomach felt very sick after ingesting this amount of food. My heart was pumping three times it's normal speed. I felt like I was going to have a heart attack.

  • How does this impact my health?

Based on the Canadian Food Guide, a person my age should be consuming 2,500 calories for low level of activitiy. I consumed 2,380 just from this meal. I couldn't find the Canadian version for the daily values so I pulled it from the FDA.

Twice the fat and saturated fat, more than twice the sodium, just from one meal. Since I'm paying for Healthcare, might as well take advantage of it.

I am surprised at the inspection report. It was run down and I saw flies flying around.

VERDICT: I expect to experience these nights again when busy season hits. Stomach approved but heart disapproved.

Costa Rican Tilapia with spinach and asparagus
I ate the fries from the fish and chips. Portions were humongous
Review of Restaurant:
  • Why did I come to this restaurant?

My friend had a karaoke birthday at Take One Studios Karaoke which is a 3 min drive away. A co-worker spoke highly of this restaurant, especially with the 50% off appetizers during select time.

  • What did I think of the service?

The waitress did not write down our order because she thought she could remember. She came back to double check if I got the 6 oz or 9 oz tilapia, so much for her memory. She also said that she liked the poutine, I would definitely recommend the poutine here.

  • How did my sensitive stomach feel?

Nothing bad after dining here. Starting to think that my stomach is building a tolerance. Can't wait to get food poisoned again and shut down another restaurant.

  • What about the York Region Inspection Report?

Inspections are performed at the restaurant side and the cocktail side.

Let me bring your attention to the restaurant side, nothing happens at the bar side, alcohol kills bacteria.

On April 28, 2011, they were prone to vermin, dust and fumes.

On Nov 9, 2011, a few infractions such as dirty ceiling, no thermometer for dishwasher, equipment not accessible for cleaning. A re-inspection was performed 5 days afterwards with no infractions.

Aug 13, 2012, they have dirty floors.

This reminds me of a fish market, dirty floors and ceilings.

I think the kitchen looked like this (excuse for the low quality - turn up the volume):

VERDICT: JerJai's Seal of Approval. Rated G like Finding Nemo.

Xin Jiang BBQ Restaurant - Cheap food first, sanitation later

Date visited: November 17, 2012

Time: 1:30 am (Late night snack after watching Skyfall)

Party Size: 3

Price: About $15 split evenly between 3 people, before tax and tips

Food consumed by party:
- BBQ Lamb Skewer - $2.50 x6
- Sprout with Garlic Sauce - $9.99
- Beef with Garlic & Chili Sauce - $9.99
- Pitcher of Amber (It tasted cheap and was cheap, forgot the price of the pitcher)

Pictures of food consumed: (Click on images to enlarge)

Sprout with garlic sauce
Supposedly a local beer called Amber
Beef with garlic and chili sauce. The soup was very oily and was not spicy at all.
Lamb skewers. Tasted saltier than the Dead Sea.
Review of Restaurant:

  • Why did I come to this restaurant?

This is not my first time here, probably my second or third visit. This is one of my buddies' favourite restaurant. Known for their lamb skewers and cheap beer, a beer none of my friends heard of.

  • What did I think of the service?

The service was alright. The employees were laid back, playing games on their cell phones. We felt bad asking for service since they probably lost a life in their game.

  • How did my sensitive stomach feel?

Good question to ask. The only near death experience was eating the beef with garlic and chili sauce. First concern was that it would be too spicy, which was not. Secondly, it was very oily. But no problem encountered.

  • What about the City of Toronto Inspection Report?

Source: http://www.toronto.ca/health/dinesafe/index.htm?show=detail&id=100944
First inspection performed on April 20, 2011, it received a conditional pass. A common grading for restaurants opened by Chinese people, especially from Mainland China. It was expected nonetheless.

April 20, 2011
- Failed to clean urinals as often but was corrected during inspection. Felt bad for the person doing this. But your fault since you have so much time playing games and leaving things to the last minute.
- Operator failed to provide washroom supplies: wondered how the person cleaned the urinals.

Common infractions
- Operator fail to properly wash surfaces/maintain in room is a common one failed on April 20, 2011 and March 27, 2012
- Operator fail to properly wash equipment on July 18, 2012 and October 19, 2012.
- People forget and need to be educated on proper sanitation. You'd think that the employees would have time to clean especially when they clearly have time to play games.

Let's put ourselves in each others' shoes for a second. If you are paid minimum wage or even below, you wouldn't really care about maintaining the premises. Obviously, you are not being compensated enough. Blame the owners for not paying the employees enough and educating them on how to maintain the restaurant according to basic sanitation standards.

VERDICT: JerJai's Seal of Approval. I will be back but my stomach will not have mercy for any slight stomach upsets.

Hot Pot King - The King of Hot Pot

NOTICE TO READERS:

I know someone involved in this restaurant. This fact does not alter my review of this restaurant. My stomach is honest.

Date visited: December 8, 2012

Time: 7:30 pm to 11:45 pm (We had a 4+ hour Hot Pot experience)

Party Size: 4

Price: $15 after tax and tips

Type of restaurant: Hot Pot (People pay to cook their own meal?)

Food consumed: (Click on image to enlarge)
Gotta love MS Paint. I seriously need to learn how to use Photoshop.
Pictures of food consumed: (Click on images to enlarge)
Sausage, pork skin, beef ball, fish ball, I think tofu skin
Shrimp wontons and chive dumplings
Lamb
Beef
House made squid balls and beef balls
Lettuce
Mushrooms
Beef again
Lamb again
Tofu skin, vermicelli (did not eat), the rest were mentioned above
Popeye's favourite vegetable
Stuffed tofu and lamb again
Plum juice
Beef, it was old meat but thick slice
Re-frozen green tea ice cream, had one bite.
One of the party member is a microbiologist with a Master's degree. His research field is with salmonella and other diseases. He pointed out that with the ice cream, once it is thawed, you shouldn't freeze it again. As the ice cream melts, bacteria will start growing. Once you freeze it, you are just freezing the bacteria, not killing them. Think of cryogenicist. Once thawed again, the bacteria will be become active.

Review of Restaurant: (Click on images to enlarge)
Before:
At this hot pot location, you can make you own sauce, they have signs to direct you on how to make specific sauces such as Japanese style, Thai style. The problem is that most of the ingredients are missing and the place was a mess. To get some of the sauces, you use a soup ladle. The problem is that the ladle is too small, so you need to reach in the sticky container to grab the ladle. Your fingers gets sticky but most importantly, if there are bacteria on your fingers, it's going to be in the sauce.

Raw Eggs:
Usually when I see raw eggs, I would avoid it. The reason is that at Chinese places, they will most likely buy eggs from the cheapest suppliers. Recently, the Chinese newspaper made a report on the egg industry. The eggs are covered in bird poo, feathers and dirt, which is then shipped to groceries and restaurants. They are usually not cleaned properly before being sold or served. We cheated at this restaurant, my friend went to wash the eggs. Upset stomach incident averted #1.

The hot pot heating unit is covered in grease. It was really gross. To adjust the temperature, you need to poke it with the end of your chopstick, obviously, not with the end that you eat with.

During:

Nothing special, just water boiling with food in miso soup. Well, there is lots of oil.

We used the lettuce to soak up the oil and fat. Look at that glistening fat covered lettuce. I sacrificed a piece of beef to make it photogenic. I made the mistake of trying to eat that piece of beef. My friend stopped me from getting an upset stomach again. The reason, the plate had raw lamb on it. Stupid me. I replaced my chopstick. Upset stomach incident averted #2.

After:

Look at the solidified fat, looks yummy.

The waitress was cleaning the table behind us. She dumped everything into the pot. Notice how the beef and lettuce were not dumped and left there. She carried it back to the kitchen. Let's just hope that I don't see what they do with it.

Washroom experience:

All went well. Normal bowel movements despite eating large amounts of protein. Could be that my friend ate most the meat and I was spared with the crumbs.

I was very surprised, no major infraction at all in the past 2 years. The owner must have paid the inspector very well or the inspector's family was kidnapped but later released because of the positive report.

VERDICT: JerJai's Seal of Approval. I was not paid to promote this restaurant. My friend just had my family kidnapped, nothing major.
